Our Story

Fox & Hen Fine Poultry Co. as it exists now was founded in 2020. The inspiration behind it can be traced back to 2014, when our founder - Theo Alex Dean - got his first job working for a scrappy small business known as The Poultry Palace in Placerville, California. The Poultry Palace was run by a great poultryman by the name of James "Jay" LeRoy. What he did there was not so different from what we do now - he raised baby chicks into coop ready pullets, and then sold them. Theo, already well-versed in "book knowledge" about chickens, spent four incredible years alongside Jay learning the hands-on skills required to raise chickens for a living and as a passion.

Although he departed that business to pursue other ventures in 2018, Theo never forgot what a joy and a privilege it was to provide the community with happy, healthy, beautiful poultry. That's why he jumped back into the business on his own in 2020, during the height of the Covid quarantine when everyone was scrambling to raise their own backyard chickens (just in case the world was ending).

In 2021, Theo and his family moved to Shingle Springs, CA and launched the business in a much bigger way -- a little too big, as it turned out! Due to infrastructure issues and the realization that we weren't yet prepared to run the business the way we envisioned it, we made the choice to place the whole project on hiatus. This pause lasted three whole years.

Fox & Hen relaunched officially on March 31st, 2024, the fourth anniversary of its original opening date. Armed with the experience gained from both past successes and past failures, we've dedicated ourselves to making this business into everything it possibly can be. We look forward to a lifetime serving the community by raising and selling the best chickens possible and putting our hard work and our profits towards causes we believe in.
